Introduction Selling digital products—like ebooks, music, or software—is easy with WooCommerce. In this guide, we’ll walk you through creating and configuring a downloadable product, using simple language and screenshots so you can follow along even if you’re new to WordPress.
1. Log In to Your Website
Open your browser and navigate to
yourwebsite.com/wp-admin
.Enter your Username and Password, then click Log In.
2. Go to the Products Section
In the left-hand menu, click Products.
Click Add New at the top of the Products page.
3. Enter Product Details
Product Name: At the top, type the name of your digital product (e.g., "My Ebook: Beginner’s Guide").
Description: In the big text box, write a clear description of what customers will receive.
4. Enable Downloadable and Virtual
Scroll down to the Product Data box.
Check both Virtual and Downloadable checkboxes.
Virtual removes shipping options; Downloadable reveals download fields.
5. Upload Your Digital File
After checking Downloadable, fields appear below:
Downloadable Files
File name: Enter a label (e.g., "Ebook PDF").
File URL or Choose file: Click Choose file to upload from your computer or select from the Media Library.
(Optional) Click Add file to include multiple download files.
6. Set Price and Inventory
Click the General tab in the Product Data box.
Regular price: Enter the price you want to charge (e.g.,
9.99
).(Optional) Sale price: Enter a discounted price for promotions.
Skip the Inventory tab since digital products don’t stock-count unless you use a plugin for limited downloads.
7. Add Images, Categories, and Tags
In the right column, set a Product image (cover art or icon).
(Optional) Add Product gallery images for previews.
Assign relevant Product categories (e.g., "Ebooks").
Add Product tags (e.g., "PDF, digital, guide").
8. Publish Your Product
When you’re ready, click the blue Publish button in the right column.
Wait a moment—your digital product is now live and ready for customers to purchase and download.
9. Test the Download Process
Visit your store’s front end and purchase the product (you can use a test payment method).
After checkout, check the Order Received page and your email for the download link.
Click the link to ensure the file downloads correctly.
Congratulations! You’ve successfully added a downloadable product in WooCommerce. Customers can now buy and instantly download your digital files. If you run into any trouble, revisit the downloadable settings or reach out for support.
